Baltimore, MD – Today, Cameron Walkup, President of the College Democrats of Maryland, issued the following statement:
“We express our deepest sympathies for those affected by the terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, this morning. We offer our support to our Muslim brothers and sisters in this time of mourning and fear.
“The College Democrats of Maryland unequivocally condemns bigotry in all forms. This attack intentionally targeted the Muslim community, stemming from hatred and bigotry which has been increasingly normalized across the world in recent years. Early reports indicate that the perpetrator of this attack praised President Donald Trump in a 74-page manifesto as ‘a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose.’
“We cannot rest while white supremacy and islamophobia continue to fester. We must all unite with the Muslim community against this type of bigotry and work to prevent horrific events like this from occurring ever again. ”

Baltimore, Maryland – Recently, the public became aware that Del. Mary Ann Lisanti (D) of District 34A used a racial-slur at an after-hours gathering to refer to a legislative district in Prince George’s County. After first saying she was “sure” she had used the slur, she later claimed that there was no “independent verification.” On February 26, House Speaker Michael Busch stripped Delegate Lisanti of her leadership position, and on February 28, the House of Delegates voted 137-0 to censure Delegate Lisanti.
Del. Lisanti was elected by the people in her district in hopes that she would work for their best interests and advocate for them. The disturbing language used by her shows that she is unfit to serve the people of her district and Maryland. The language used by Del. Lisanti is not a reflection of the Democratic Party’s values. College Democrats of Maryland condemns this action and calls for for her resignation or expulsion.
Following a unanimous vote of present Executive Board members, College Democrats of Maryland President Cameron Walkup released the following statement:
“Racism has been part of our state since the land it occupies was first colonized. With her hateful language, Delegate Lisanti reminds us that far too few people are willing to acknowledge and overcome that terrible history. From uttering that word to failing to make any semblance of a coherent and remorseful apology, Delegate Lisanti is unable and unwilling to serve all of her constituents. She should resign, and if she continues to refuse to do so, the House of Delegates should expel her.”
